Just off of Ashville Highway and right inside the city limits of Spartanburg is Cleveland Park, a large, beautiful old park with a great playground. It is one of my family’s favorite places to go for outings! Our kids love not only the amazing play structures, but also the footpaths around the park where we can walk and enjoy the beautiful scenery together. ~Christina Goshorn, Kidding Around Contributor
What You’ll Find at Cleveland Park
One of our favorite things to do when visiting Cleveland Park is to explore, walking the footpaths and looking at the big trees, stopping for a picnic lunch in the grass or at a picnic table, enjoying the scenery in swings by the lake, and splashing in the creek under the dam. Children love to feed the many ducks and swans around the park! The landscape is lush and gorgeous, and the lake is beautiful.
The Play Area
The large playground was designed using suggestions given by Cleveland Academy students and was built by a community of volunteers. It is built with durable plastic lumber and has a spongy, rubberized safety play surface that is great for softening tumbles. The play area is open to the public from dawn to dusk. It is divided into two sections, the “Great Adventure” zone for kids ages 5-12, and the “Tot Lot,” geared towards kids ages 2-5. Both sections are roomy and full of great play structures!’
The Great Adventure area includes several slides, climbing structures, tunnels, swings (including a handicap accessible swing and a tire swing), a water wheel, a rope bridge, musical instruments, and a very popular roundabout. The Tot Lot includes a sand pit with a mini bulldozer, baby swings, climbing and tunnel structures, a short set of monkey bars, and a large musical xylophone. There are also some really cute spots designed for your little ones to strike a pose for pictures in this area! My baby especially enjoys the sandbox and swings.
Surrounding these play structures is a walking path with several seating areas along the way. A short walk beside a roomy flat green space beside the playground (that would be great for frisbee games!) leads to a large dam with a walking bridge overhead. At the base of this dam is a fun, safe access point to the creek where kids can splash and play along with the ducks under parental supervision. We saw lots of children there, wading around in their bare feet and having a blast! My daughter was ecstatic to even find a seashell. Nearby is the park’s birthday pavilion and a playground barn with picnic tables. Both are available for rent, as well as the other two pavilions on the grounds that are further from the play areas.
For a great family experience, we would highly recommend visiting Cleveland Park. We always leave with still more fun to discover at future visits!
