It was 1978. In a world where Star Wars was gaining fame every year and children were begging their parents for the Atari 2600, a wordless book made its way to the shelves. Beautiful squares of snowy art were brilliantly printed on each page unfolding the story of a little boy who gets lost in the magic of the snow and makes a new friend. Author and illustrator Raymond Briggs introduced the world to The Snowman. Now, the Spartanburg Philharmonic wants you to experience the wonder and joy of this now iconic Christmas story LIVE in concerts on December 14 and 15, 2019, The Snowman and Other Holiday Favorites. Find out how you can enter for your chance to win a family package of 4 tickets!
The Music of The Snowman
The climax of this story is when The Snowman takes the boy by the hand, runs out of the garage onto the snow-covered ground, and then flies up into the air. The squares of art turn into two-page spread masterpieces of The Snowman and the boy flying above the world. When this story became a movie in 1982, Howard Blake composed a magnificent soundtrack as well as the song, “Walking in the Air”, which is sung while the boy and his new friend fly above the world.
The Snowman and Other Holiday Favorites
At their concerts on December 14 and 15, The Spartanburg Philharmonic will play The Snowman soundtrack LIVE while you view the animated movie which was Academy Award nominated for Best Animated Short Film. You need to find out how this story (and movie) ends. The story will be narrated by Spartanburg’s own Betsey Neely Sikma (Saturday performances) and Kirk Neely (Sunday performance). “Walking in the Air” will also feature a moving performance by a guest vocalist from the community.
But, that’s not all! The Philharmonic will also play songs from Frozen and Harry Potter, and the auditorium will be filled with joyous singing in a carol sing-along.
There will be free children’s activities in the lobby and yummy treats for sale. This is a Christmas concert you do not want to miss!
