Families have all different traditions during the holidays. One activity seems to be shared by so many as an annual tradition, enjoying a production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.

For so many, as soon as the curtain rises and you hear that unmistakable score, it signals the start of the Christmas season. The story of a little girl and a gift from her mysterious uncle has stood the test of time and become a holiday staple.

Ballet Spartanburg’s Nutcracker

The Nutcracker has been performed for over a hundred years, and for nearly three decades Ballet Spartanburg has brought it to life for the people of the Upstate.

It takes a huge cast of talent gracing the stage at the Twitchell auditorium, to bring this show to life. They dance across the stage making it look effortless, but it hasn’t happened overnight. They’ve been rehearsing for the three night production since October, under the direction of Carlos Agudelo.

Coordinating all of this is no small accomplishment either. It takes multiple rehearsals all happening at the same time, then fit together to create one cohesive performance. The production includes not just members of Ballet Spartanburg, but members of Spartanburg Gymnastic and a cast of community members that make up the party goers at the beginning of the show. You might even recognize one of those party goers from local TV.

Local Coffee to Support Dance Education

This year you can take home part of The Nutcracker magic with you and enjoy it with breakfast. Little River Roasting and Ballet Spartanburg have teamed up to offer a yummy souvenir from the show in the form of a coffee blend that is a “medium roast with a buttery graham cracker note to the taste”.  Proceeds from the coffee sales will benefit The Center for Dance Education.  According to it’s website,  The Center for Dance Education is “an instructional center committed to providing the highest quality dance education in a non-competitive atmosphere.” You can enjoy a cup of morning coffee and be helping mold the next prima ballerina all at the same time!
