Skate Away Those Winter Blues!

Posted on | No Comments

I always feel my mood lighten and my heart pump after an hour or two at the local skating rink with my family. When the temperature drops, it is easy to fall back on an inside activity that never disappoints. It is a family favorite; many Thursday nights you will find my husband, son, and me at Sk8erz Family Fun Center.

Sk8erz offers a Family Night Special that you just can’t beat. Just $3 per person for families, we spend our evening skating circles around each other….literally. Plus there are specials offered on concessions and on other nights of the week, too. The owners of Sk8erz have a second location, Roebuck Skate Center. Like Sk8erz, Roebuck Skate Center has an indoor playground, specials for families, concessions, and birthday party packages.

A little about roller skating

Historians tell us that roller skating has been around since the mid-1700’s, growing popular in America since the patent of the modern two-by-two roller skates in 1863. The pastime grew over the years, and the 1970’s became the decade of popularity when skating paired with disco music. Inline skates were created in the 1990’s, and roller hockey was featured in the 1992 summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Roller skating has evolved as a hobby and a sport. Inline speed skating is a non-contact agility sport, and roller derby is a high-energy contact team sport. Did you know that Spartanburg is home to a female roller derby team? Founded in 2011, Spartanburg Deadly Dolls is skater-owned and operated, with women of varied ages from the Upstate. Their first match of 2017 is on February 11th. Get your tickets here for this exciting, family friendly event at Skate Palace!  Have a child interested in roller derby? Boys and girls, ages 8-17, can join the Upstate Junior Roller Derby League, The Spartanburg Shakers.  Their season starts March 1 and ends October 31.

For many long time Spartanburg residents, Skate Palace on Pine Street is a family favorite. Opened in 1979, they host roller derby practices and matches, birthday parties, school and church functions, fundraising, and public skate sessions. Every Saturday Night, families can check out their special (2 adults and 2 kids or 1 adult and 3 kids) for $29.99: Includes Admission, Skate Rental, 1 16″Pizza and 1 Pitcher of Drink. What a deal!

Roller skating is fun, but even recreational (moderate) skating improves cardiovascular health. It has a low impact on bones and joints, and it builds strength and coordination. An adult can burn approximately 350-600 calories an hour, depending on size and speed of roller skating. Plus, is hard to skate with a frown on your face. So what are you waiting for? Get skating, Spartanburg!
