Spartanburg Soaring! International Kite Festival comes flying into town on April 18th, 2020. This annual kite-flying event in Spartanburg is a great excuse to take your family downtown and experience the joy of kite flying while celebrating our community. The area surrounding Chapman Cultural Center will be filled with live music, food trucks, arts and crafts vendors and families galore. Best of all – the skies will be filled with kites of all different shapes, sizes
The festival happens behind the Chapman Cultural Center. This is a great spot in downtown Spartanburg adjacent to Barnet Park. There is ample parking in the lots and in the St. John Street Garage near Chapman Cultural Center. The land directly behind Chapman Cultural Center becomes the area where everyone will fly their kites. Families can pick a spot to watch the festivities and let their children run and play.
When you go, plan to fly a kite! Many families bring their own, but there will also be kites for sale at the event. In addition to kite flying, there will be professional
Music and Art
Kite flying is not the only fun thing to do at this special event. There will also be live music that will help fill the air. If you get need a break from kite flying, your family can also visit the Craft Market in Barnet Park. The Craft Market will feature art by regional artisans – this is a great opportunity to support our local arts community and find affordable, unique pieces.
My favorite part of any outdoor event in Spartanburg is the food, and Spartanburg Soaring! is no exception! Food trucks line the street offering everything from ice cream, vegetarian dishes, and ethnic cuisine to kid-friendly dishes like pizza. Last year’s festival had a great variety of choices that allowed each member of my family to try something different. As the event gets closer, more food vendors will be announced on the Facebook event page.
Why This Event is a Must for Families
While Spartanburg Soaring! is not that many years old, it has quickly become a tradition for many local families. It is a smaller crowd than Spartanburg’s Spring Fling, but it has the same festive atmosphere. My family loves to pack up our kites and find a spot to sit together while eating a delicious meal, listening to live music and watching our neighbors celebrate simply being outside. Since this event is FREE, families can enjoy it without having to spend any money. Spartanburg Soaring! is a can’t miss.
